The cantonal departments recommend HSK courses
Pupils whose first language is not German can attend special courses to deepen their knowledge of their first language. HSK teaching ("Heritage language and culture") promotes the first language and conveys background knowledge about the language region. It strengthens pupils' language skills and supports them in identity building and integration.
Teaching is politically and denominationally neutral and recognised by the Education Directorate of the Canton of Zurich, where courses in 28 languages are recognised.
Attendance is voluntary. Courses comprise at most four hours per week, start no earlier than the second primary class and last at most until the end of lower secondary school.
